He talks a lot about atheism and existentialism on the Objects in Space commentary, iirc.
As soon as he said the word Angel I knew he was going to bring up that exact scene. It was one of the first bits of Angel, or any Jossverse at all, that I ever caught and it made a huge impact on me. OMG that was like ten years ago. Big moment in the life of young tris.
I also thought that was one of the best things to ever be portrayed on the show, any show of his in fact. The best thing about Whedon (I can only talk about BTVS, ATS and Firefly... I couldn't stand Dollhouse) is that actions have consequences and we see them in the continuity throughout the seasons.
I think that's a very important factor in atheist ethics, that we affect the here and now, even if it happens later, it still happens here.
